The Golden Rock Pagoda (Kyaik Htee Yoe)

The Golden Rock Pagoda at Kyaik Htee Yoe is one of Myanmar’s famous pagoda and is a “must” pilgrimage for any Myanmar Buddhist. It is wonderful that a golden head-shaped large stone that carry the pagoda is half-sitted on the edge of huge rock for thousand years, and covered by gold leaf and delicately balanced on the edge of a cliff. The pagoda at the Golden Rock is said to hold a hair of the Buddha. It seems to defy all law of gravity. Even many earthquakes attacked this region, nothing had happened to Kyite Htee Yoe pagoda.

There are a few ways to reach to the top of the hill. You can hike from Kimpun, which takes longer (about 5-6 hours) and more exhausting than taking the truck, but the walk can feel lovely. You can feel the spectacular views, jungle air and nearby waterfalls along the way. You can also enjoy completely green mountains, sunset and sunrise from the top of the hill. As an alternative, porters can carry you up on a sedan chair on poles. Do not worry if you feel uncomfortable being carried, in Myanmar it is quite common that older or wealthy people let the porters earn.
The beauty of Kyaik Htee Yoe is to observe the pilgrims praying, lighting candles and donating thin gold leaves on the boulder, which however is only permitted for males. There are plenty of buildings around for religious purposes but also to provide for the many pilgrims in several ways.
